Metro, tram and shuttles: what hmetro.fr actually shows

High-frequency modes are not read the same way as a rural bus. On a line running every three minutes, a minute-precise timetable is almost meaningless, what matters is the interval and the state of the service. Here is how to read a station page on hmetro.fr.

Frequency rather than timetable

On metro lines and most tram lines, the operator does not publish an exact time for each train. It describes a headway instead: one train every two to four minutes at peak, every eight to ten minutes in the evening. That interval is what the dataset describes, and therefore what structures the display.

In practice this means a two-minute gap between the announced time and the actual one is not an error on such lines, it is how the mode works. Conversely, on a river or sea shuttle the timetable is firm, and the same gap becomes significant.

Source and freshness of the data

The data comes from GTFS datasets published by transport authorities and operators on the French national open transport data platform (transport.data.gouv.fr). We re-import them automatically every night, which means a service change taking effect on the morning itself may take up to twenty-four hours to appear here.

When a network publishes a real-time feed GTFS-RT or SIRI, we poll it roughly every five minutes and match it to the planned trips. Not every metro and tram network publishes one: the absence of real-time data at a station reflects the absence of a feed at the source, not a failure on our side.

Service suspensions, closed stations and works

Service alerts are collected every ten minutes. On urban rail networks they mostly cover three cases: a suspension on one section, the temporary closure of a station, and planned engineering works, common on metro systems in the evening and at weekends.

An alert is published at route level. It therefore appears on every station served by that route, including those still operating normally. The operator message states the exact scope when it provides one; we do not infer it on their behalf.

Limits worth knowing

hmetro.fr is an independent, free service with no account to create. We are not affiliated with any operator, we sell no tickets, and we have no way to correct incorrect data at its source.

For a tight connection, a last departure or a trip to an airport, check with the operator: their information prevails. hmetro.fr is there for quick lookups and for comparing several networks in one place, not to guarantee a departure time.
